Mechatronics in Supply Chain Automation

In-demand skills for the systems of the future

If you like mechanics or robotics, have a background in engineering and are a creative problem-solver, a career in mechatronics could be the right fit for you.

Supply chain automation is increasingly using new technologies in mechatronics to increase production, improve accuracy, and meet the e-commerce revolution’s needs. Employers need a workforce skilled in mechatronics to design, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment on the plant floor.

A mechatronics technician knows the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical engineering and works with both teams to create and maintain simpler and smarter systems. Mechatronics technicians apply their knowledge of engineering to solve technical problems and maintain automated mechanical equipment. Their job may entail inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical and electronic components.

The future of supply chain automation needs a workforce that includes mechatronics technicians who embrace and integrate new technologies to automate business, manufacturing, and logistics functions.

What Is Mechatronics?

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field that combines electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering, to work with smart technologies, such as robots, automated guided systems, and computer-integrated manufacturing equipment. While other technical fields tend to be narrow in scope, mechatronics requires skills from multiple disciplines. Robotics, control systems, and electromechanical systems all fall under mechatronics. The skillsets of a mechatronics technician are crucial to build and maintain high-tech equipment used in supply chain automation.

PMMI Mechatronics Certification

The SCA has developed industry-recognized certifications and partnered with educational institutions to define the relevant skills that prepare the next generation of automation workers. For those interested in mechatronics jobs, the PMMI Certification in Mechatronics helps move manufacturing forward by providing employers, schools, and potential workers the tools needed to advance the workforce and close the ever-expanding skills gap. Certification tests are based on industry-developed standards, recognized by the Manufacturing Institute’s Skills Certification System.
